Daffodils
Anyone who has ever seen the movie Doctor Zhivago
with Julie Christie and Omar Sharif can never forget the fields
of daffodils. The yellow daffodil flowers symbolized Lara, Julie
Christie's character, the running theme throughout the narrative.
If you haven't seen the movie you should, it's a 5 Academy Award
winner. The fields of daffodils are some of the
most evocative flower display scenes ever filmed.
Well you can very easily have the same beautiful flowers in your
yard to bloom every March, April and May. They are one of the first
flowers to bloom and is always an uplifting surprise full with the
promise of spring.

Daffodils maybe the easiest and most dependable to grow
of all flowers. They are very hardy and virtually pest
free and animals like deer will not bother them. The common daffodil
bulbs are not expensive and you can buy sacks of them in most garden
centers at a reasonable price. The bulbs multiply and a patch will
grow over the years.
Daffodils like sunny locations with moist and well drained soil.
They don't like high nitrogen concentration in the soil, so straight
manure or any high-nitrogen fertilizer should be avoided. It is
important not to cut back the leaves until they are brown and dead.
After blooming, the leaves enable the bulb to get ready to bloom
for next year.

Plant a bunch in the fall, water until the rains come and early
next spring when everything else is dead or still dormant, the yellow
flowers will suddenly appear and you'll know that everything is
on the right track.
