Fences
and Yards
Fences are a necessity
in my opinion. This holds especially true if you see dogs around
the neighborhood or if you have kids. However, they are much more
than just boundary markers or structures for containment.
Fences make good wind breaks. If you like gardening, it provides
the shelter plants love. Most of all a good fence provides
privacy. When in your own backyard one does not want to
feel as though they are out in public. Backyard is for relaxing
and more privacy the better.
Fencing should be in good shape, not leaning, ready to fall down,
coming apart or becoming a hazard. Fixing them is a big task you
will want to avoid. Fences are usually mentioned as a big plus in
home ads.
Non wood fences made of bricks, cinder blocks, masonry or rocks
are the best if constructed correctly. They are virtually maintenance
free and offer the best in privacy and shelter.
Hedges can serve the same purpose as a "living
fence". In many ways hedges are better than wood or metal (chain
link) fences. You may have to water them and give an occasional
trim but they will not fall down, lean or need to be painted and
maintained. They get fuller and taller each year, offering better
privacy, shelter and sound barrier.
Ideally a yard should be level. It makes everything
easier from yard maintenance to simply getting into your house.
I am not fond of having to climb up to a house. It can be great
aerobic exercise but it can also get to be a chore, especially in
the winter with long, steep, icy steps or walks.
If not level, back yards should not slope towards
the house. Even a slight grade will cause surface and ground water
to move inexorably toward the house. It can lead to potential moisture
problems for a basement or a crawl space.
A backyard should be a place of solace, a safe haven
for the home owner, a place where they can be comfortable and relax,
away from nosy neighbors and prying eyes. A good fence or hedges
can provide this.
